Global Digital Citizenship and Seesaw

Good Evening!

Technology is easily accesible for most of our students but many don’t know the precautions that come with it. Today, I’m going to discuss the importance of teaching our students how to be good global digital citizens as they work with technology in and out of the classroom, more specifically with an educational resource I shared a few weeks ago, Seesaw.

There are four factors when it comes to Global Citizenship that teachers and students need to be aware of.

1. Safe, Ethical & Legal Use of Technology
2. Socially Responsible Digital Use
3. Equitable Access of Technology
4. Global Awareness & Cultural Understanding

The following poster does a phenomenal job putting it into student friendly language.

In what learning environments would Seesaw be appropriate?
Seesaw is a great tool to use in the classroom in collaboration with our peers, our school, and other classrooms around the world. Seesaw allows for teachers to approve of everything students are posting to ensure their being good digital citizens, even though it still remains crucial for us to teach our students so that they don’t misuse other technological resources.

In what learning environments would the technology resource I presented NOT be appropriate? How might it be modified to be appropriate?
Seesaw can be used across all content areas and with a variety of activities/lessons. As long as students know how to use it appropriately there wouldn’t be a particular environment where it may not be appropriate. It then falls on the teacher to effectively use Seesaw to assist student instruction and learning. Seesaw could be deemed as inappropraite in a SPED classroom where UDL isn’t being used to ensure that ALL students can fully participate. If the teacher requires for students to record themselves summarizing a book read but Johnny is nonverbal then Seesaw would be inappropriate. However, if the teacher asks them to write a summary and take a picture to share on Seesaw knowing that all her students are able to write, then it is modified appropriately.

What do you now know that needs to be considered when using technology in the classroom?
In order for Seesaw to be a success in your classroom it is important to know your students, families, and schools. Is this a resource that would be equitable to all including students with disabilities? Is it accessible to all within the classroom as well as outside? Has your school provided you with tablets to take advantage of all the resources avaiable within the application? Do your families have access to a smartphone to download the app to be involved?
Students should also be reminded that they should not click on pop ups, share personal information, nor go on inappropriate websites. Students should be kind and respect others online just as is expected of them in the classroom.

Thank you for reading today’s blog and hope you got a snippet of the importance of teaching our students how to be good global digital citizens!

Have a wonderful night,

  1. Good afternoon Mrs. Vanderford,

I absolutely love the photograph “I am a Digital Citizen”. I love how it not only explains it, but points to different areas of the child using a visual representation of each factor. One of the great aspects of Seesaw is that teachers have to approve what students are posting before it is posted. Teachers have the opportunity to talk to any students who are trying to post anything that is inappropriate and discuss the situation. If teachers really pay attention to students post before just approving it, it can really help students understand how to be good digital citizens.

    Have a magical day,

  2. Mrs. Vanderford,

I love the poster that you provided within you blog in order to put all of your information into kid friendly language, I think that is such an important thing to remember when teaching! I also love all of the considerations that you are making about your digital resource; asking yourself is it accessible to ALL of your students is one of the most important things to remember when including technology into the classroom that can also be accessed at home as well. Thanks for sharing!

    Xoxo,

    Miss Morrell
